Your family may be driving you nuts. You have too many bills. Gas prices continue to increase. Your allergies are killing you. On top of all this, the game that brings you so much happiness has brought you absolutely nothing for the last 2 weeks. Can you say drought? You're stressed man. Relax. You're not only slowly killing yourself, but you're killing your brain cells.


Stress isn't only considered a risk factor for many medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, but it's also been shown to decrease cognition and memory. If you are serious about poker, no matter how passionate you are, you HAVE to minimize the level of stress in your life. If not, you're destined for failure. If you can answer yes to any of the questions above, I highly encourage you to read on. Not only may your game depend on, but so may your life. And that's not an exaggeration.

What is stress

Stress, when controlled, is actually a normal physiological response that helps the body in times of need. I'm sure you've heard of the flight-or-fight response. That's stress, the good stress. When you're in danger, your body releases hormones called catecholamines (noradrenaline and adrenaline) to protect you. Your blood pressure rises, your heart pumps faster, your lungs receive more oxygen, your blood sugar increases, and you become extremely focused and alert. Blood, carrying oxygen and energy sources, is diverted to the most important organs: brain, heart, lungs, and muscles. Think of everything that would happen if you were being chased by a lion. That's your fight-or-flight. It's definitely a good thing. In fact, it's so good that the pharmaceutical and dietary supplement companies have made various compounds that mimic the actions of catecholamines. You've probably heard of some of them: caffeine, ephedra, Ritalin, Adderall, etc.


However, we're no longer getting chased by lions or bears. We no longer experience the same stressors our ancestors experienced. We've evolved into more complex human beings. We've exchanged spears for pencils. However, our emergency response system has not. Now stress is worry. Stress is fear. Stress is pain. Stress is every day life. What was once a life or death situation is now an argument with our spouse or a big mistake during a critical moment of a huge game. Our emergency response system thinks we're constantly getting chased by lions and bears. Welcome to the world of cortisol.


During prolonged periods of stress, the body stops relying on catecholamines, and switches to cortisol for support. Because the body thinks it's in a life or death situation, cortisol must provide a number of different functions:

Increases blood sugar levels by breaking down fats and proteins thereby providing an adequate amount of energy

Provides anti-inflammatory effects

Increases blood pressure and the strengthens the contractions of the heart so the body receives an adequate supply of blood

Stimulates the brain so you're more focused and alert

Too much cortisol

Now those functions may sound beneficial, especially to a poker player. However, they're not. Your body cannot handle that. They were meant to protect you from life or death situations, not bad breaks at the poker table. They were meant to be acute changes, not long-term changes. Prolonged exposure to cortisol results in the following:

glucose intolerance

high blood pressure





decreased cognition and memory

What was beneficial acutely is detrimental in the long-run. Your body basically begins breaking itself down. It's like a fire alarm system that continues to run well after the fire has been put out. Sometimes water damage is just as bad as fire damage.

Just think of what this would do to your poker game. Your memory will be impaired. You won't be able to sleep thereby worsening your cognitive abilities even further. You'll begin to develop glucose intolerance impairing how your body uses energy sources. Can you say fatigue? Your blood pressure will rise putting you at greater risk of strokes or even mini strokes further impairing your cognitive abilities. Your entire mental capabilities are at risk. It's a poker nightmare.

A personal story

Many of you have probably got a glimpse of this if you've been on prednisone, a prescription medication that mimics cortisol. As I was writing this article, I got an emergency call from my grandfather last Thursday at midnight. He honestly thought he was going crazy. He told me he couldn't sleep. He was sweating profusely, going through 5 shirts a night. He was suffering from bad anxiety. He couldn't focus on anything. His exact words were, "I'd rather be dead than suffer like this." Now mind you, this was a full-blooded Italian who once drove cars for the mafia, and even met Al Capone on numerous. I've personally seen him chest-up to a steroid abusing twenty-five year at the ripe age of 72. For him to say those things, they had to be real. The cause?

He recently was diagnosed with pneumonia on top of having severe COPD. The doctor prescribed him an antibiotic and 55mg of prednisone. Yes, you heard me right. 55mg of prednisone. He was literally suffering from an overdose of stress. I told him to decrease it to 10mg daily and stop it completely after 3 more days. By the 2nd day of the 10mg dosing, all of his side effects had disappeared. That's what extreme stress can do to you. What do you think causes a nervous breakdown? Stress. Whenever you see a complete meltdown by someone, aka Brittany Spears, Rampage Jackson, etc, stress plays a large role in their demise. Like the saying goes, "stress kills."


If you are playing for money, it's imperative that you not only handle stress appropriately, but you must go one step further and minimize it. A couple of simple changes to your life can make a world of difference. Not only will you be healthier, but you'll have a better focus, a better memory, and an increase in energy that even Red Bull can't give you. I guarantee that these changes will translate into greater success at the table.
